Calculate your average with coefficients

A coefficient gives weight to a mark. A weighted average accounts for these differences without duplicating values.

A coefficient gives weight to a mark. A weighted average accounts for these differences without duplicating values.

Put marks on the same scale

Before averaging, check that marks use the same scale. A mark of 35 out of 50 corresponds to 14 out of 20, because 35 ÷ 50 × 20 = 14. Adding 35 directly to a mark out of 20 would give a result that is difficult to interpret. Actual course rules may contain other provisions: use the ones that apply to your assessment.

Multiply each mark by its weight

Consider three marks: 12 with coefficient 2, 16 with coefficient 3 and 14 with coefficient 1. Their contributions are 24, 48 and 14 respectively. Their sum is 86. The sum of coefficients is 2 + 3 + 1 = 6. The weighted average is therefore 86 ÷ 6, or approximately 14.33. The result is closer to 16 than the simple average because that mark has the greatest weight.

Enter corresponding series

In the calculator, enter marks on the first line and coefficients in the same order on the second. Separate values with spaces or semicolons. A comma can still be used as a decimal separator. There must be exactly as many coefficients as marks. Negative coefficients are rejected and their sum must be strictly positive. A zero coefficient excludes the mark from the calculation.

Prepare for a next assessment

To estimate a required mark, you need the current average, the total of its coefficients, the remaining assessment's weight and your chosen target. The result is a mathematical constraint. If it exceeds the marking scale, the target cannot be reached through that assessment alone in this model. The tool does not replace your institution's compensation, resit or rounding rules. Check those conventions before interpreting the result.
