Calculate journey cost without forgetting units

Distance, consumption and price per litre: three inputs estimate fuel. Other expenses are added afterwards.

Estimate the litres needed

For a 300 km journey with average consumption of 6 L/100 km, first divide distance by one hundred. You get three lots of one hundred kilometres, or 3 × 6 = 18 litres. Consumption must be expressed in the correct unit. A value in kilometres per litre cannot be entered directly in the same field.

Apply a price you supply

At a hypothetical price of €1.80 per litre, those 18 litres cost €32.40. Adding €15 in tolls brings the total to €47.40. The site does not retrieve station prices: replace the suggested figure with the price relevant to your planning. If you plan an identical return journey, double the distance and include tolls for both journeys.

Measure your usual consumption

You can obtain average consumption by dividing litres used by distance travelled, then multiplying by one hundred. For example, 36 litres over 600 km give 6 L/100 km. A consistent measurement between two comparable fill-ups is more useful than an isolated figure. Differences in filling, traffic, terrain, load and weather may affect the result.

Choose what you share

Fuel and toll costs do not necessarily represent the full cost of using a vehicle. Parking, maintenance and wear are excluded. To share an expense among several people, first decide which items and how many participants are included, including or excluding the driver as agreed. For three people sharing €47.40, each share is €15.80. Keep the same conventions for comparisons.
