Writing Titles and Meta Descriptions Without Chasing a Magic Length

Use relevance, clarity, differentiation, and honest expectations when preparing search titles and descriptions.

Title tags and meta descriptions are editorial controls, not fixed-size advertising slots. Character counts can help you edit, but treating one number as a ranking rule usually produces awkward copy and false confidence.

A better process is to write for meaning first, check how the wording looks in a preview, then review the real search result after publication.

What Google actually says about title links

Google recommends descriptive and concise <title> text, warns against keyword stuffing and repeated boilerplate, and may generate the displayed title link from several sources on the page. Its documentation also states that there is no fixed title-length limit, even though results are visually truncated to fit devices. See the current Google Search Central title-link documentation.

That makes “write exactly 60 characters” the wrong objective. A clearer objective is: identify the page accurately, distinguish it from nearby pages, and put the most useful wording early enough that it remains understandable if the display is shortened.

How to write an SEO title without stuffing it

  1. Name the real topic. A visitor should know what the page covers before they click.
  2. Differentiate similar pages. If several pages all begin with the same generic phrase, the unique part may be lost.
  3. Use the primary wording naturally. Repeating variants of the same keyword does not make the title clearer.
  4. Add the brand only when it helps identification. Do not let boilerplate push the page-specific topic out of view.

Example

Instead of SEO Tools | Best SEO Tools | Free SEO Tools | EseoGen, use a title that reflects the exact task of the page, such as SERP Preview Tool for Titles and Meta Descriptions.

Meta descriptions are suggestions, not guaranteed snippets

A meta description can summarize a page and help a searcher decide whether it is relevant. Google explains that snippets are primarily created from page content and may use the meta description when it better describes the page for a query. Read the current snippet documentation.

So the useful question is not “Did I hit 155 characters?” It is “Does this description accurately explain why this page answers the query?”

A practical description checklist

  • Describe the specific page, not the entire website.
  • Use the main topic where it reads naturally.
  • State the benefit without promises you cannot substantiate.
  • Avoid duplicate descriptions across many pages.
  • Do not list every synonym merely to fill the field.

Use previews as an editing tool

EseoGen’s SERP Preview Tool provides a simplified browser-side preview and character counts. It is useful for spotting titles that bury the distinctive words or descriptions that read poorly at a glance.

The preview does not query a live Google result and cannot guarantee the displayed title or snippet. Search interfaces vary by query and device, and Google may rewrite the presentation.

Review after publication

After the page is indexed, compare the intended title and description with the actual search presentation for relevant queries. A rewrite is not automatically an error: sometimes the search engine has chosen page text that better matches a query. If the displayed wording exposes a vague title, duplicated template text or an unhelpful description, improve the source content rather than merely trimming characters.

Bottom line

Character limits are editing references, not SEO laws. Write a concise, differentiated title and an honest description, preview them for readability, then judge the result in the context of the real page and real search queries.
