Internal Linking Strategy: How to Choose Pages and Anchor Text

نُشر بواسطة بتاريخ
Internal linking and link strategy planning

Internal linking is not a quota exercise. Adding ten links to every article does not create a strategy. Useful internal links connect pages that are genuinely related, help visitors continue a task and give crawlers a clear path through the site.

The practical question is not “How many internal links should I add?” It is “Which existing page is the most useful next destination from this section?”

Start with the target page

Choose the page you want to support and write down its real topic. Then identify source pages that already discuss a closely related concept. A source page should create a natural reason to reference the target; the link should not feel inserted merely for SEO.

EseoGen’s Internal Link Mapper lets you paste a source inventory in the form URL | topic, define a target page/topic and rank source candidates by normalized topic overlap. It is a planning aid based on user-supplied data, not a live crawl of your website.

Prioritize relevance before authority assumptions

A page that shares the target’s subject and receives real user attention may be a strong source. But do not invent “link equity” scores if you have not measured them. Start with what you can verify: topic relevance, placement context, crawlability and whether the source page is itself accessible.

Use descriptive anchor text

Anchor text should help a reader anticipate the destination. Google’s current link best practices recommend descriptive, concise anchor text placed naturally in surrounding context.

Weak anchor

Click here gives little information outside the surrounding sentence.

Better anchor

technical SEO checklist tells the reader what the linked page is about when that is genuinely the destination topic.

Do not force the exact same anchor every time. Natural language produces useful variations such as launch checklist, technical SEO review or website launch checks where the context supports them.

Make the link crawlable

Use a normal HTML anchor with a resolvable href for navigation you expect search engines to follow. Avoid building important navigation only through interactions that do not expose a conventional link in the rendered page.

Place links where the reader needs them

A contextual link works best when the destination expands the point being discussed. Site-wide footer links and navigation have different purposes; they are not substitutes for meaningful editorial connections.

Review the paragraph around each link and ask:

  • Would the reader plausibly want the destination now?
  • Does the anchor describe it accurately?
  • Is the destination live and canonical?
  • Is the same link repeated unnecessarily nearby?

Build links in both directions when useful

When you publish a new guide, do not only link out from it. Review older relevant pages and add links back to the new resource where those links improve the reader journey.

This is one reason a content inventory matters. A new page can remain isolated even if its own article contains many outgoing links.

Audit for broken and outdated destinations

Internal linking strategy includes maintenance. Redirects, deleted pages and reorganized categories can turn previously useful references into unnecessary hops or dead ends.

Periodically sample important pages and verify that linked destinations still return the intended content. Where a URL has permanently changed, update the source link when practical instead of relying forever on a redirect chain.

A repeatable workflow

  1. Define the target page and topic.
  2. List existing pages that may be contextually related.
  3. Use topic similarity as a shortlist, not a verdict.
  4. Read each candidate paragraph and choose only natural placements.
  5. Write descriptive anchor text.
  6. Confirm the link is crawlable and the destination is live.
  7. Revisit older pages after new content is published.

Good internal linking is editorial architecture. It helps users move between related answers and makes the site’s relationships explicit without relying on arbitrary link counts.
